New Urban News conducts a periodic survey of neighborhood-scale new urban communities throughout the US. The latest survey, completed in December 2003, identified 648 communities built, under construction, or in planning.

These are designed according to the principles of the New Urbanism and are at least 15 acres. They generally are built on an interconnected network of streets and blocks, have a mixture of uses and housing types, have one or more centers, and feature pedestrian-friendly design.
