As new urbanists struggle to find ways to publicize the environmental advantages of walkable land-use patterns, a planning technology is taking shape that could make that case on a wider scale.
Who will opt for a green community?
Know your audience: Andres Duany identifies four main target groups and their outlooks.

Commentary: Many reasons to go green
In almost no time, it seems, New Urbanism has gone from a design movement recognized primarily for good placemaking, to one that is perceived as beneficial to the environment. The following articles are available in print only:

Excerpt: ‘Externalize those social needs’
"...'What has blown up the McMansions is the lack of community,’ says Duany. ‘We need to externalize those social needs, rather than privatizing them.'" — Bryan Walsh in Time Magazine, Dec. 19.

Cities as carbon-reduction machines
"It may be useful to think of cities as great carbon-reduction machines," Armando Carbonell told a Lincoln Institute of Land Policy symposium Nov. 1.

Sustainability mandates are on the way
Sustainability policies are on the rise in governmental circles, and will increasingly influence the shape of urban development.

Advancing from ‘urbanists’ to ‘green urbanists’
Torti Gallas tells how it incorporated sustainability traits into its projects.

Innovative design for California infill
Although new urbanists are sometimes criticized for taking a retro approach to architectural style, they have been consistently innovative in their approach to building typology.
