NEW URBAN NEWS

The best source of information on the most important trend in planning and development

New Urban News began publishing in May of 1996 in response to a growing interest in the planning and development trend called the New Urbanism. Also known as "smart growth" and traditional neighborhood development, the trend focuses on building mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods instead of conventional suburban subdivisions, shopping centers and office parks.

New Urban News provides substantive and concise information for professionals and lay people with a strong interest in the New Urbanism. New Urban News is published eight times a year, and each issue is full of articles covering a wide range of topics connected to the New Urbanism. Significant projects, planning concepts, finance, architecture, construction, home sales, street design, inner city revitalization, zoning, and many other subjects receive in-depth, authoritative coverage. Readers learn who is designing, building and promoting walkable neighborhoods in the US and Canada, how they are doing it, and how well they are succeeding.

New Urban News is full of high-quality images illustrating various aspects of the New Urbanism and tables that provide detailed information on projects, laws, home sales and other valuable data.

New Urban News brings together the diverse disciplines required to build mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods. Planners, architects, developers, government officials, engineers, financiers, lawyers, and real estate professionals are among the readers of New Urban News.

New Urban News is a tool to help people create better communities.

In just over three years, paid circulation has grown to 5,000. Most subscribers are in the US, but several hundred reside in Canada, Australia and a dozen other countries. About 2,300 of New Urban News' subscribers are members of the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU), based in Chicago. Through a contractual arrangement, all CNU members receive a subscription to New Urban News.

What others say

Leading town planners and publications have great things to say about New Urban News.

New Urban News has already become an indispensable tool of the movement to Traditional Town Planning. We, the beleaguered few, it turns out, are many and very active. This periodical is the record of a revolution.”
Andres Duany
Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company

New Urban News has filled a gap ignored by the national trade publications. The latest breakthroughs about the New Urbanism get covered concisely, in a readable way that is accessible to our clients. But it also has enough detail on projects and techniques to be useful to practitioners.

The national list of traditional neighborhood projects, updated regularly in New Urban News, is the one index which covers the movement at a glance.

The publication is indispensable as a real-world tool. We insist that our clients read every issue.”
Victor Dover,
Dover, Kohl & Partners

New Urban News has become the voice of the young but rapidly growing neotraditional or new urbanist movement of land-use planning and development.”
